CSCI 5330.002: Secure Electronic Commerce
Spring 2004

This course will cover aspects of secure electronic commerce, with emphasis placed on the technical security aspects of secure e-commerce software development. While the primary emphasis will be on technical aspects, we will also cover business and legal issues at a level that would allow a technical person to interact effectively with business and legal people. The course will include both textbook material and study of current research papers.

Specifically, a successful student in this class should get the following benefits from the class:

  1. Knowledge of and experience with secure web development, with exposure to at least 3 current technologies (such as XML, Perl, PHP, ASP, JSP, JavaScript, etc.).
  2. Knowledge of how cryptography can be used to support confidentiality and integrity of electronic transmissions and transactions.
  3. Knowledge of electronic transaction and payment systems.
  4. Knowledge of Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) settings and trust models, with specific systems such as X.509 certificates and PGP's decentralized web of trust.
  5. Familiarity with basic network and system security, and the ability to set up a typical electronic commerce setting of networks and hosts.
  6. Familiarity with business, legal, and ethical issues related to electronic commerce, and the interaction of these issues with technical issues.
  7. Familiarity with current research topics and results in secure electronic commerce and supporting technologies.

Prerequisites: Students should have successfully completed CSCI 3400, and should be comfortable writing code. Experience creating web pages is helpful. Students taking this class should have graduate student standing, and so are expected to have the background to read current research papers and have skills to critically analyze the results. Also, be aware that secure electronic commerce relies heavily on cryptography, which is a very mathematical subject, so students should have good mathematical abilities.
